Sanctuary Care at Bransby Horses has been created for equines who are unable to be rehomed through our Perfect Partner scheme. Some equines have multiple health conditions requiring life-long treatments; others may need to have interactions carefully managed to prevent distress and ensure that they have quality of life. Following their training, many equines will flourish, giving them the best chance of finding a home, but if not, will be forever safe and cared for in our sanctuary.
From the day an equine arrives at Bransby Horses various assessments will be carried out by the vet, farrier and equine dentist at the Animal Reception Centre (ARC). The team caring for the equine during this time will also be observing and assessing any behavioural needs the equine may have. This determines the best yard for them to go to; if they are put on sanctuary care with health issues it is important the teams expertly monitor them closely. Depending on the outcome of the vetting it can be determined there and then if the equine requires additional handling or care plans.
We recognise animals need providing with more than the basic welfare needs to have a good quality of life and to have a life worth living, meaning their emotional needs as sentient beings need to be accounted for too. This is why we keep certain equines on site for the rest of their lives, to ensure they are properly understood as individuals, and all their needs are met.
However, we are an open-minded charity and even though our teams don’t actively seek ‘Perfect Partners’ for equines in sanctuary care, occasionally they may be rehomed if an applicant has the perfect living environment for them.
