Say hello to Tawny!
Tawny is an 11hh, liver chestnut, Welsh mare who is ready to find a home as a non-ridden horse.
Tawny has come such a long way since being with us at Bransby Horses. Upon admission, she was an unhandled, scared, pregnant mare with her defences very much up. She foaled with us in 2022 and was given the time to be the best mum she could be. When her foal was weaned, she began handling training. She was taught to trust humans and was shown that they aren’t all bad. Through the dedication and patience of her trainers Tawny has blossomed into a trusting, loving mare who gives you her all.
Tawny’s Perfect Partner would be someone who is understanding and patient with her, can calm her worries and will continue to build trust. It took some time to get her to trust humans, and we want to ensure that this continues through continued positive experiences and lots of patience. Creating a bond with Tawny is essential in gaining her trust. This will be especially true when it comes to veterinary procedures, as she can be a little worried so will need time and understanding.
Once this bond is created, Tawny will be your best friend, she will seek out attention and will stand for hours getting a fuss. She is incredibly rewarding to work with and enjoys experiencing new things with her trusted handler. Although she may experience some set backs, with patience, understanding and some extra reassurance, she soon bounces back.
Tawny would love a slower paced life, where she can grow old with grace and ask for nothing. She would benefit from a smaller herd of other laid-back equines. Her field mates would have to be happy with giving her space when she needs it, she is a very independent lady and would not suit a more pushy equine friend.
Tawny currently lives out 24/7 with access to shelter. Equally, she will happily stable with friends in sight.
Rugs: Tawny is rugged in the winter as we have found she can feel the cold.
Tawny sits around the middle of the herd hierarchy. She likes her own space and will chase off other equines to have her alone time. Tawny would prefer to live in a small herd or one other, independent equine.
Forage/Feed: No hard feed given and restricted grazing to appropriately manage her weight. When grazing becomes too sparse she is supplemented with low calorie hay.
Medication: N/A
Farrier: Tawny is barefoot and trimmed on a 6 week cycle. Due to her being nervous around new people, she would benefit from an understanding farrier
Dentist: Sedated as standard Bransby Horses procedure.
Vices: Tawny can become defensive around her food bucket, although she is never nasty with this, we ensure to give her plenty of space if she receives a feed.
Vet: Tawny has been needle shy in the past, she is overcoming and improving on this every day and can be successfully IM’d and is improving with IV. She has had a mild bout of laminitis in the past, but this was caught and treated quickly.
Medication: Tawny is very clever and often refuses medication or wormer if she detects it in her feed. With patience, she can be wormed and medicated by syringe.
