In January 2017, Bransby Horses welcomed an additional ten mares from Bodmin Moor, Cornwall. Despite the best efforts of multiple organisations, the welfare crisis continues.
Named by staff, Buttercup, Blossom, Camellia, Primrose, Ivy, Daisy, Lilac, Jasmine, Tulip and Snowdrop were assessed by vets on arrival. Unfortunately, Jasmine had an infection from a previous injury that could not be treated due to her feral state. This meant that sadly, the decision was made by vets to end Jasmine’s suffering and she was put to sleep just days after arriving.
The remaining nine mares are settling in well, small steps are being taken to build their confidence and comfortably increase their interaction with humans. The team at the Animal Reception Centre (ARC) have worked closely with the mares to help them gain weight and improve their physical condition.
The mares from the Moor will be split into smaller groups in the coming weeks, after being processed again by the staff alongside vets to check their health status, have their second vaccinations and be treated by the dentist and the farrier.
