A Will is a legal document that sets out clearly how you want your estate, which is everything you own, to be handled after your death. In it, you can name someone to do this for you (your executor) and tell them what you want them to do. It’s also very important to keep your Will up-to-date.

Why do you need a Will?
To give you and your family peace of mind. It leaves them clear about your wishes and it’s one less thing for them to worry about.
Do you already have a Will?
Life can be unpredictable and there are many reasons why you may need to update your Will over time. It’s a good idea to review your Will periodically and as circumstances change, you may need to add to it or alter it by explaining, modifying or revoking part of it, known as a codicil.
A codicil is a straightforward document that needs to be signed and witnessed in the same way as a Will.
The advantage of creating a codicil is that it avoids the need to write a new Will and is often the cheaper option.
Any codicil must be stored with your Will in a secure place, such as in a safe at your home, at a bank, with your solicitor or Will writing service, or lodged with the Probate Service. Wherever you store your Will, make sure that someone you trust knows where it is located so they can access it when the time comes. You should also consider registering your Will with the National Will Register which records its existence and location.
