Will you remember us?
By creating a legacy for us in your Will you can help make a better future for many horses, ponies, donkeys and mules in our care and in need.
3 in 4 equines are cared for through funds from gifts in Wills. Legacies are vital to our future rescue and rehabilitation work. Your legacy will enable us to continue to provide long-life sanctuary care for animals in need.

What is a Legacy?
In your Will you can include gifts known as legacies which can be money, shares, property or particular items.
You are free to leave legacies to people special to you and remember any charities you wish to support.
A pecuniary legacy is an amount of money fixed at the date the Will is made, which is then subject to inflation so may be worth less over time. A residual legacy is whatever is left after pecuniary legacies, tax and costs are taken out of your estate. Residual legacies benefit Bransby Horses more as they keep pace with inflation through interest rates and increase in property and share values.
Instructing a solicitor that specialises in drafting Wills now means you can be satisfied that your Will reflects your wishes. A poorly drafted Will may not do what you intend it to do and may then cost your estate thousands of pounds to put this right.
What is a Will?
A Will is a legal document that sets out clearly how you want your estate, which is everything you own, to be handled after your death. In it, you can name someone to do this for you (your executor) and tell them what you want them to do. It’s also very important to keep your Will up-to-date.
Bransby Horses provides access to a free and professionally drafted Will for Good through our accredited partners, Bequeathed. Find out more under ‘Free Will Writing’.
Why do you need a Will?
To give you and your family peace of mind. It leaves them clear about your wishes and it’s one less thing for them to worry about.
Do you already have a Will?
Life can be unpredictable and there are many reasons why you may need to update your Will over time. It’s a good idea to review your Will periodically and as circumstances change, you may need to add to it or alter it by explaining, modifying or revoking part of it, known as a codicil.
A codicil is a straightforward document that needs to be signed and witnessed in the same way as a Will.
The advantage of creating a codicil is that it avoids the need to write a new Will and is often the cheaper option.
Any codicil must be stored with your Will in a secure place, such as in a safe at your home, at a bank, with your solicitor or Will writing service, or lodged with the Probate Service. Wherever you store your Will, make sure that someone you trust knows where it is located so they can access it when the time comes. You should also consider registering your Will with the National Will Register which records its existence and location.

Our Wonderful Supporters
Don’t just take our word for it. We have some wonderful supporters who have already decided to leave us a legacy in their will.
John and Jackie

John and Jackie Panczak have supported Bransby Horses since the late 1980s. During their decades-long support, they’ve witnessed the charity grow and evolve and knew our charity’s founder, Mr Peter Hunt, very well.
The Panczaks have supported us in so many ways over the years and made the decision to leave a gift in their Will after their experience of fostering a companion from Bransby Horses for their horse Charlie, following the passing of their beloved Ben. Having seen first-hand the care and dedication provided to every horse here, they understand the true value that their lasting legacy will make. “We know that Bransby Horses gives every equine the very best chance of a secure and happy future. Whether this amazing care is at Bransby Horses itself or with its network of fosterers, the best interests of the horse or donkey are put first. By creating a legacy in our Wills we know that we are helping to build a better future for our equine friends.”

Eileen
In January 2020, Eileen contributed to our emergency response to devastating floods, allowing us to move many equines to safety.
Eileen passed away in November 2018. Eileen kindly remembered Bransby Horses in her Will. Gifts in Wills help us rescue and care for hundreds of equines every single year.
Christine
Long-term supporter of Bransby Horses, Christine Mason, sadly passed away in January 2021, yet her legacy lives on thanks to the gift she left in her Will.
A true advocate for animal welfare all her life, Christine Mason very kindly created a legacy of £5,000 in her Will to Bransby Horses. This generous gift provided vital funding when our fundraising income was at an all-time low due to site closures and lack of community events as a result of the pandemic. Christine’s gift has enabled us to continue with our rescue and welfare work during a time of instability for the charity – a lifeline in a time of need.
Christine was born in Birmingham in 1935, and showed a passion for animals early on, owning several pets from childhood. She rescued lurchers and greyhounds from appalling conditions throughout her life and provided them with a secure and loving home to spend the rest of their lives.
Despite having a busy career working for Cadbury’s Bournville Factory and later working as lecturer with Birmingham City Council, Christine’s passion for animals only grew with time. She joined several established animal welfare organisations and proved to be an outstandingly effective fundraiser, helping to raise thousands for various charities over the years.
Christine even set up her own charity, Canine Friends, and held car boot sales, raffles and open garden days at her house with help from friends and family. The funds Christine raised were distributed between various animal charities near and far, including Bransby Horses and a charity which aims to prevent the abuse of bears for their bile in Asia.
Sadly, in Christine’s final years she suffered from vascular dementia, but her love of animals never wavered and after her passing, she left instructions for her estate to be divided between several animal charities, including ours.
The £5,000 Christine left to Bransby Horses means the legacy she created will always live on as she helps us to provide a second chance to so many equines in need. You too can Create Your Legacy and help shape the charity’s future for generations to come, just like Christine.
